Effect of Intermittent Feeding on Gonadal Function in Male And Female NMRI Mice During Chronic Stress BABT
Ehteram,Badri Zarrin; Sahraei,Hedayat; Meftahi,Gholam Hossein; Khosravi,Maryam.
ABSTRACT Stress can inhibit gonadal activity via Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Gonad (HPG) axis activity suppression. In the present study, effects of intermittent feeding (IF) on gonadal function under stress in male and female mice were evaluated. Twenty eight male and twenty eight female mice's were divided into four groups. The control group received adequate food and water without stress. The second group received four days of electric shock without food deprivation. The third group was deprived of food two hours/day for a week, and the fourth group was deprived of food (2 hours/day for seven consecutive days) and then electric foot shock stress was applied to them for four days. Blood samples were collected from all animals for plasma testosterone, estrogen...

Effect of moisture content on some mechanical properties of mucuna bean CIGR Journal
Etim, Promise Joseph; Alonge, Akindele Folarin; Akpan, Godwin Edem.
Some mechanical properties of mucuna bean seed were studied at different moisture levels to provide relevant data for development of cracking machine for the seed. The frictional coefficient of the seed on five structural surfaces (plywood, aluminum, glass, steel, and wood) was determined using the incline plane method. The mechanical properties were determined using a Universal Testing Machine. The coefficients of friction of the seed on the respective structural surfaces were observed to have increased with increasing moisture levels. The force to crack the seed on its major axis decreased from 1595.1 to 244.9N as moisture level increased from 4.79 to 18.53% (dry basis), with a similar trend also observed on the minor axis. The deformation on both axes...

Effect of repeated stress on novelty-induced antinociception in rats BJMBR
Torres,I.L.S.; Vasconcellos,A.P.; Silveira Cucco,S.N.; Dalmaz,C..
There is extensive evidence that acute stress induces an analgesic response in rats. On the other hand, repeatedly stressed animals may present the opposite effect, i.e., hyperalgesia. Furthermore, exposure to novelty is known to induce antinociception. The effects of repeated restraint stress on nociception after exposure to novelty, as measured by the tail-flick latency (TFL), were studied in adult male rats. The animals were stressed by restraint 1 h daily, 5 days a week for 40 days. The control group was not submitted to restraint. Nociception was assessed with a tail-flick apparatus. After being familiarized with the TFL apparatus, each group was subdivided into two other groups, i.e., with or without novelty. Animals were subjected to the TFL...

Effect of salt on the growth and metabolism of Glycine max BABT
Queiroz,Helena Müller; Sodek,Ladaslav; Haddad,Claudia Regina Baptista.
Soybean plants cultivated with 50, 100 and 200 mM of NaCl, revealed that root growth was less affected by salinity than shoots. Salinity led to a reduction in leaf area and an increase in water content of the roots. These factors could contribute to the adaptation of the plant, improving its hydration. Although nitrate and free amino acid levels were reduced by salt treatment in roots, protein content of leaves was not altered. Salinity led to alterations in xylem amino acid composition, with increases in Ser, Ala, Gaba and Pro and a decrease in Asn. Similar changes were seen for Asn and Ser in roots together with a much stronger increase in Gaba. It is suggested that the decline in Asn reflects its conversion to Ala and Gaba (via Glu) in the roots while...

Effect of temperature shock on soybean microspore embryogenesis BABT
Moraes,Ana Paula de; Bonadese-Zanettini,Maria Helena; Callegari-Jacques,Sídia Maria; Kaltchuk-Santos,Eliane.
In this study the effect of cold and heat shock on androgenetic induction in soybean anther culture was tested. Anthers of soybean were subjected to 4 and 33ºC, while the anthers used for control were maintained at 25ºC. Cytological analysis done during the 30 days of culture showed that frequencies of symmetrical binucleated and multicellular pollen grain did not differ among temperature treatments. Multicellular pollen grain could be formed by symmetrical division, as well as by assymetrical division. In relation to the embryo induction, the results of the treatments did not differ too. These results suggested that these treatments did not induce a sporophytic pathway in soybean.

Effect of the trehalose levels on the screening of yeast as probiotic by in vivo and in vitro assays BJM
Martins,Flaviano S.; Miranda,Ieso C.; Rosa,Carlos A.; Nicoli,Jacques R.; Neves,Maria J..
Probiotics are viable defined microorganisms (bacteria or yeasts) that exert a beneficial effect on the health of the host when ingested in adequate amounts. Screening for such biotherapeutic agents is commonly performed by in vitro assays simulating gastrointestinal environment to determine the ability to survive in the digestive tract. In the present study, the possibility of extrapolation of data obtained in in vitro assays to in vivo conditions was studied using five Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains isolated from Brazilian Atlantic rain forest. Trehalose contents and survival after exposure to a combination of physiological stresses generally found in the gastrointestinal tract of humans were determined for the five yeasts and compared to the behavior...

Effects of acupuncture on behavioral, cardiovascular and hormonal responses in restraint-stressed Wistar rats BJMBR
Guimarães,C.M.; Pinge,M.C.M.; Yamamura,Y.; Mello,L.E.A.M..
Stress is a well-known entity and may be defined as a threat to the homeostasis of a being. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of acupuncture on the physiological responses induced by restraint stress. Acupuncture is an ancient therapeutic technique which is used in the treatment and prevention of diseases. Its proposed mechanisms of action are based on the principle of homeostasis. Adult male Wistar EPM-1 rats were divided into four groups: group I (N = 12), unrestrained rats with cannulas previously implanted into their femoral arteries for blood pressure and heart rate measurements; group II (N = 12), rats that were also cannulated and were submitted to 60-min immobilization; group III (N = 12), same as group II but with acupuncture needles...

Effects of acute and chronic physical exercise and stress on different types of memory in rats Anais da ABC (AABC)
Mello,Pâmela Billig; Benetti,Fernando; Cammarota,Martín; Izquierdo,Iván.
Here we study the effect of acute and chronic physical exercise in a treadmill and of daily stress (because forced exercise involves a degree of stress) during 2 or 8 weeks on different types of memory in male Wistar rats. The memory tests employed were: habituation in an open field, object recognition and spatial learning in the Morris water maze. Daily foot-shock stress enhanced habituation learning after 2 but not after 8 weeks; it hindered both short- (STM) and long-term memory (LTM) of the recognition task at 2 weeks but only STM after 8 weeks and had no effect on spatial learning after either 2 or 8 weeks. Acute but not chronic exercise also enhanced habituation in the open field and hindered STM and LTM in the recognition task. Chronic exercise...

Effects of clove oil on the stress response of matrinxã (Brycon cephalus) subjected to transport Acta Amazonica
Inoue,Luís Antônio Kioshi Aoki; Afonso,Luís Orlando B.; Iwama,George K.; Moraes,Gilberto.
Fish transport is one of the most stressful procedures in aquaculture facilities. The present work evaluated the stress response of matrinxã to transportation procedures, and the use of clove oil as an alternative to reduce the stress response to transport in matrinxã (Brycon cephalus). Clove oil solutions were tested in concentrations of 0, 1, 5 and 10 mg/L during matrinxã transportation in plastic bags, supplied with water and oxygen as the usual field procedures in Brazil. Clove oil reduced some of the physiological stress responses (plasma cortisol, glucose and ions) that we measured. The high energetic cost to matrinxã cope with the transport stress was clear by the decrease of liver glycogen after transport. Our results suggest that clove oil (5...

Effects of electroacupuncture on stress and anxiety-related responses in rats Anais da ABC (AABC)
BASSETTO,RICARDO M.; WSCIEKLICA,TATIANA; POUZA,KATHLEIN C.P.; ORTOLANI,DANIELA; VIANA,MILENA B.; CESPEDES,ISABEL C.; SPADARI,REGINA C..
ABSTRACT The aim of this work was to investigate if eletroacupuncture at PC6 would modulate the stress-induced anxiety-like behavior and the level of activation of several brain areas. Rats were distributed in groups: control; submitted to immobilization; submitted to immobilization and eletroacupuncture at PC6 or at the tail. Immobilization increased grooming and decreased stretched attend postures and the time spent in the open arms of the ele-vated plus-maze. Eletroacupuncture at PC6 or tail canceled the effect of immobilization on grooming and attenuated the stretched attend posture. Immobilization increased Fos-immunoreactivity in the prefrontal cortex, medial and central amygdala, paraventricular and dorsomedial nuclei of the hypothalamus, lateral...

Effects of hypoxia and elevated ammonia concentration on the viability of red snapper embryos and early larvae ArchiMer
Bardon-albaret, Agnes; Saillant, Eric.
The effects of hypoxic conditions and elevated ammonia concentrations on the viability of embryos and newly hatched larvae of the red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus) were investigated. In all experiments, tested levels of hypoxia or ammonia concentrations were applied to embryos and unfed newly hatched larvae from three different spawns. Exposures began at 1 h post fertilization (pf) and lasted until all individuals in a group had expired. Survival rates were monitored daily in duplicates for each spawn in each treatment. Fertilized eggs exposed to 2 mg L− 1 dissolved oxygen (29% saturation) showed complete mortality before hatch while 81% of embryos in control groups (> 85% saturation) hatched and subsequently maintained high survival until 5 days pf....

Effects of pre-slaughter fasting on broiler welfare, meat quality, and intestinal integrity Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Pereira,REP; Martins,MRFB; Mendes,AA; Almeida,PAZ ICL; Komiyama,CM; Milbradt,EL; Fernandes,BC da S.
The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture (MAPA) regulations establish 12 hours as the maximum pre-slaughter fasting period for broilers; however, many processing plants have considered this time is not sufficient, and consequently return the birds to the farms, with consequent economic losses and welfare problems. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the possible effects of longer pre-slaughter fasting times. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of pre-slaughter fasting times longer than those established by MAPA on broiler welfare, breast meat quality, and intestinal integrity. Forty 42-d-old broilers were submitted to different pre-slaughter fasting times: group I: 6 hours, group II 9h, group III 12h, and group IV 15h. Bird...

During 84 days, the effects of density on juvenile sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) (76 +/- 16 g) were studied in an experimental tank-based flow through system. Performance, stress response and resistance to virus infection were analysed under five stabilized rearing densities: 10, 20, 40, 70 and 100 kg m(-3). Water quality parameters (CO2, total ammonia nitrogen and O-2) were measured and maintained close to the recommended values for farmed sea bass by adjusting water renewal exchange. No significant differences were observed between density treatments, neither on stress response (cortisol) nor susceptibility to nodavirus. With regards to biological performances, the daily feed intake and specific growth rate were significantly lower in fish reared at...

Effects of simultaneous exposure to stress and nicotine on nicotine-induced locomotor activation in adolescent and adult rats BJMBR
Zago,A.; Leão,R.M.; Carneiro-de-Oliveira,P.E.; Marin,M.T.; Cruz,F.C.; Planeta,C.S..
Preclinical studies have shown that repeated stress experiences can result in an increase in the locomotor response to the subsequent administration of drugs of abuse, a phenomenon that has been termed behavioral cross-sensitization. Behavioral sensitization reflects neuroadaptive processes associated with drug addiction and drug-induced psychosis. Although cross-sensitization between stress- and drug-induced locomotor activity has been clearly demonstrated in adult rats, few studies have evaluated this phenomenon in adolescent rats. In the present study, we determined if the simultaneous exposure to stress and nicotine was capable of inducing behavioral sensitization to nicotine in adolescent and adult rats. To this end, adolescent (postnatal day (P)...

Effects on prolactin secretion and binding to dopaminergic receptors in sleep-deprived lupus-prone mice BJMBR
Palma,B.D.; Hipolide,D.C.; Tufik,S..
Sleep disturbances have far-reaching effects on the neuroendocrine and immune systems and may be linked to disease manifestation. Sleep deprivation can accelerate the onset of lupus in NZB/NZWF1 mice, an animal model of severe systemic lupus erythematosus. High prolactin (PRL) concentrations are involved in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus in human beings, as well as in NZB/NZWF1 mice. We hypothesized that PRL could be involved in the earlier onset of the disease in sleep-deprived NZB/NZWF1 mice. We also investigated its binding to dopaminergic receptors, since PRL secretion is mainly controlled by dopamine. Female NZB/NZWF1 mice aged 9 weeks were deprived of sleep using the multiple platform method. Blood samples were taken for the...

Efficacy of clove oil as anesthetic in handling and transportation of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (Actinopterygii: Cichlidae) juveniles Rev. Bras. Zool.
Simões,Larissa N.; Lombardi,Danielle C.; Gomide,Andrea T. M.; Gomes,Levy C..
This work evaluated the efficiency of clove oil as anaesthetic in handling and transportation of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758). In the first experiment, safety concentrations of clove oil were assessed by measuring induction times to anaesthesia. The second experiment evaluated exposure times to anaesthetic. Clove oil efficiency during transportation was evaluated in a 24 h experiment using three concentrations of the anaesthetic (0, 9, and 18 mg.L-1). The most appropriate clove oil concentration to induce surgical anaesthesia was 90 mg.L-1. To biometry or other brief handling, the recommended concentration is 50-60 mg.L-1 as it provides fast recovery. Maximum anaesthesia time should be 10 min. The mortality rate of fish transported...
